C2 Proficiency

Cambridge C2 Proficiency is a high-level Cambridge English qualification assessing reading, use of English, writing, listening and speaking at CEFR C2. It is designed for candidates who need to demonstrate very advanced English ability.

Yes. CPE is the older abbreviation for Certificate of Proficiency in English. The qualification is now called Cambridge C2 Proficiency.

It is a demanding examination. Success requires sustained control of complex language, careful interpretation of texts, appropriate register and strong performance under timed examination conditions. Familiarity with English alone is not enough.

C1 Advanced targets CEFR C1, while C2 Proficiency targets CEFR C2. At C2, candidates are expected to handle subtle meaning, demanding texts and sophisticated communication with consistently high control. Explore our C1 Advanced preparation.

C2 describes highly proficient language use; it does not mean that someone must sound like a native speaker. Clear, flexible and context-appropriate communication matters more than accent imitation.

Cambridge English certificates do not have an expiry date. However, universities, employers and other organisations can set their own rules about how recent a result must be.

Our typical individual preparation range is 60–80 teacher-led hours, depending on your starting level, skills and progress. This is not a guaranteed timetable: an initial assessment helps us recommend a realistic plan.

Yes. Cambridge C2 Proficiency preparation at C2 English School is offered through individual lessons only; we do not offer C2 Proficiency mini-groups.

Two teachers are involved: one leading teacher coordinates your preparation and monitors progress, while one supporting teacher contributes focused examination support and speaking practice.

C1 Advanced is a useful foundation, but a C1 certificate does not automatically mean you are ready for C2 Proficiency. We recommend checking your current writing, speaking and exam-task performance before choosing a timetable.

Reading and Use of English lasts 1 hour 30 minutes, Writing 1 hour 30 minutes, Listening approximately 40 minutes, and Speaking approximately 16 minutes per pair. The combined testing time is just under four hours, excluding breaks and local scheduling.

Scores of 200–212 correspond to Grade C, 213–219 to Grade B, and 220–230 to Grade A; these indicate CEFR C2 achievement. Always check the current official Cambridge English score guidance.

A score of 180–199 can be reported as CEFR C1 achievement rather than a C2 pass. Your Statement of Results gives the precise outcome. Results below that range are handled according to Cambridge’s current reporting rules.

There is no universally hardest paper. Some candidates struggle with the precision needed in Reading and Use of English, while others find timed writing, listening inference or spontaneous speaking more demanding. Diagnostic practice helps identify your priorities.

Speaking performance is assessed across criteria including grammatical resource, lexical resource, discourse management, pronunciation and interactive communication, alongside an overall impression of performance. The speaking paper has three parts.

Yes. Individual online lessons can be scheduled around professional commitments, subject to teacher availability. We will help you plan a realistic balance of lessons, independent practice and feedback.

Cambridge C2 Proficiency is widely recognised as evidence of very advanced English ability. Acceptance and score requirements vary, so always confirm the policy of the university, employer or professional body concerned.

You can prepare online from home with C2 English School. That is different from sitting the official examination: Cambridge C2 Proficiency must be taken through an authorised examination centre under its permitted delivery arrangements.

You register with an authorised Cambridge English examination centre. C2 English School provides preparation, not the official examination itself. Check Cambridge English for centres, dates and registration arrangements.

The price depends on your individual plan, lesson arrangements and whether you study online or in Ireland. After assessing your starting level and goals, we can provide a tailored proposal. Examination registration fees are separate unless explicitly included in your quotation.
