What are English collocations?
Collocations are words that naturally go together in English. We usually say make a decision, heavy rain or pay attention, rather than combining those words in other ways.
Learning these patterns helps you express yourself more naturally in conversations, writing and English exams. Try our free English collocations exercises and quiz above: select your level from A1 to C2, choose Complete It or Match It, and review your mistakes.
Collocations come in different forms, including verb + noun (make progress), adjective + noun (heavy rain) and adverb + adjective (deeply concerned). British and Irish English are our default reference.
