Word Formation Challenge
Build stronger vocabulary, explore word families and practise Cambridge-style word formation questions — from A2 through C2 Proficiency.
Choose a level, type your answers and learn from your mistakes.
This is a free independent practice resource. The current prototype contains 180 original questions; our planned expanded library is 3,000. The eight-question mode is Cambridge-inspired but does not yet use full connected exam texts.
What is word formation in English?
Word formation means changing a base word into another grammatical form. You might turn a verb into a noun, add a negative prefix or choose the correct adjective to complete a sentence.
Practise for Cambridge English exams
Word formation is tested in Reading and Use of English Part 3 of Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency. Our individual questions build the underlying skills; the exam-inspired eight-question mode is a practice activity, not an official examination paper.
