24 detailed answers about Cambridge B2 First (FCE), exam preparation, results and studying online or in Ireland.
Cambridge B2 First is an English-language qualification designed to assess independent users of English at CEFR level B2. Formerly known as First Certificate in English (FCE), it tests how effectively candidates can understand extended texts, communicate ideas in writing, follow spoken English and participate in conversations. The qualification can support study, employment and personal development, although individual institutions decide which qualifications and scores they accept.
Yes. FCE stands for First Certificate in English, the older name by which many students, teachers and employers still know the examination. The current qualification is called B2 First. Searching for FCE preparation or Cambridge B2 First preparation generally refers to the same examination. Always check current official Cambridge information when booking.
B2 First is challenging because it assesses both language knowledge and the ability to use English under examination conditions. Candidates must read for detail and inference, control grammar and vocabulary, write coherent texts for particular readers, follow recordings and interact naturally. A learner may be confident in everyday conversation yet need considerable work on key word transformations, writing accuracy or exam timing. Diagnostic tasks and mock papers are more useful than judging readiness from one skill alone.
B1 Preliminary focuses on intermediate English for familiar everyday situations, while B2 First requires greater independence, more developed arguments and more flexible grammar and vocabulary. B2 First also includes demanding Reading and Use of English tasks and longer, more structured writing. Passing B1 Preliminary can be a useful foundation, but does not automatically mean a candidate is ready for B2 First; progress depends on current performance across all four papers.
Both qualifications target CEFR B2, use the same exam format and assess the same level of English. B2 First for Schools uses topics and situations designed to appeal to school-age candidates, while the standard B2 First draws on a wider range of adult contexts. Neither is a lower-level version of the other. The most appropriate choice depends mainly on the candidate’s age and interests, and the availability of examination sessions.
Cambridge English certificates do not have a fixed expiry date. However, universities, employers and immigration authorities can set their own requirements and may request evidence of recent language ability. If you need the qualification for a specific application, confirm the institution’s accepted examinations, minimum scores and recency rules before booking.
C2 English School offers a structured 60-teaching-hour B2 First preparation programme with complementary practice and resources. The calendar length depends on how often you take lessons. Crucially, 60 hours describes our preparation programme, not a guarantee that any learner can move from A2 or B1 to B2 in that time. We assess your starting level, discuss your target examination date and advise on any additional general-English development needed.
Yes. Our Cambridge B2 First online course uses live teacher-led lessons, rather than relying only on self-study videos. Students work on Reading and Use of English, Writing, Listening and Speaking with regular correction and feedback. Online study can be particularly practical for students balancing school, university or work. See our online English courses and discuss a suitable timetable with Mary.
Yes. C2 offers B2 First preparation in Ireland as well as online, subject to scheduling and programme availability. Studying in an English-speaking environment can provide additional opportunities to use the language outside formal lessons. The examination preparation itself remains focused on the Cambridge tasks and assessment criteria; activities or excursions should not be assumed to be included unless specifically stated in your programme.
Yes. Individual lessons allow teachers to prioritise the skills and exam tasks that need the most attention. For example, one learner may need intensive work on essay organisation and Use of English, while another needs listening strategies and more speaking confidence. Your leading teacher reviews progress and adapts the plan, with focused support from additional teachers as appropriate.
Yes, mini-group preparation may be available when students have compatible levels, goals and timetables. Group lessons provide opportunities to interact and practise speaking, while teacher feedback remains important. Mini-group places depend on availability and appropriate level matching; individual lessons are available for students who need a more tailored timetable or intensive support.
Our B2 First programme uses three teachers working within one preparation plan: a leading teacher who coordinates your progress, a second teacher who supports focused examination work and a third who contributes speaking practice. The aim is consistency alongside exposure to different voices, explanations and communication styles. Mary Mangan, our Director of Studies, oversees the academic approach.
There are four papers: Reading and Use of English, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Reading and Use of English has seven parts and assesses comprehension alongside grammar and vocabulary. Writing has two parts. Listening has four parts. Speaking has four parts and is usually conducted face-to-face with another candidate and examiners. Our detailed B2 First exam guide explains the tasks and preparation strategies for each paper.
The usual paper timings are 1 hour 15 minutes for Reading and Use of English, 1 hour 20 minutes for Writing, approximately 40 minutes for Listening and 14 minutes for Speaking with two candidates. Together, that is approximately 3 hours 29 minutes, often described as about 3.5 hours. The Speaking test may be scheduled separately, and your examination centre will confirm its arrangements.
Cambridge B2 First results are reported on the Cambridge English Scale. Scores of 160–172 receive Grade C at B2, 173–179 receive Grade B at B2, and 180–190 receive Grade A with performance recognised at C1. Scores of 140–159 may receive a certificate indicating B1-level achievement rather than a B2 First qualification at B2. Check the latest official Cambridge grading information and any minimum score required by your chosen institution.
A result below the B2 threshold does not necessarily mean you receive no information about your performance. For qualifying results in the 140–159 range, Cambridge may issue a certificate indicating achievement at B1. Lower scores may be shown on the Statement of Results without a certificate. Your score profile across the skills can help your teacher identify what to strengthen before another attempt.
There is no universally hardest paper: it depends on your strengths, language background and experience. Some candidates find open cloze and key word transformations difficult because answers must be precise. Others lose marks in Writing through incomplete task coverage or weak organisation, or in Listening because of distractors and paraphrase. Timed diagnostic tasks across all four papers reveal which areas deserve priority.
The Speaking paper involves four parts: an interview, an individual long turn comparing photographs, a collaborative task and a discussion. Examiners assess grammatical resource, vocabulary, discourse management, pronunciation and interactive communication, with an overall performance assessment. Effective preparation includes responding to a partner, developing ideas, comparing rather than merely describing, and communicating clearly without memorising rigid scripts.
Yes. Online individual lessons and suitable mini-group timetables can help students combine preparation with school, university or employment. The best schedule allows time for homework, reading, listening and revision between lessons. A realistic timetable matters more than simply packing many classes into a short period, particularly if you also need to develop your general B2 language skills.
B2 First is an internationally recognised Cambridge English qualification and can provide evidence of upper-intermediate English ability. However, acceptance varies: some universities and employers require C1 or a particular Cambridge English Scale score, while others specify IELTS or another test. Always check the exact requirements of the institution or organisation before relying on B2 First for an application.
C2 can teach B2 First preparation online, but online lessons are not the same as taking the official examination remotely. Cambridge B2 First examinations are taken through authorised examination centres, with centre-approved delivery arrangements. Do not assume that an at-home online exam is available; confirm the current format and location with an authorised centre.
You can register through an authorised Cambridge English examination centre that offers B2 First or B2 First for Schools. Dates, fees, identification requirements and available formats depend on the centre. C2 English School provides preparation; examination registration is separate unless an individual proposal explicitly includes it. Consult the official Cambridge centre finder.
The cost depends on whether you choose individual lessons or an available mini-group, your schedule and whether you study online or in Ireland. Our standard B2 First preparation plan is 60 teaching hours with complementary practice and resources. Contact us for a current proposal that explains tuition, scheduling and any separate examination registration fee; we do not publish a single price here that might misrepresent your individual options.
Start by reviewing your current English level and completing representative timed tasks from all four papers. Look at the accuracy of your Reading and Use of English answers, whether your writing meets the task and assessment criteria, how consistently you understand recordings, and how confidently you interact in Speaking. Our free English Level Test is an initial indicator, not a full exam-readiness assessment. Mary can discuss your goals and help plan a more complete evaluation.
