THE TOEFL iBT EXAMINATION

TOEFL iBT 2026: Understand the new examination.

On 21 January 2026, ETS introduced a revised TOEFL iBT with updated Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing tasks, adaptive Reading and Listening sections, and a new 1–6 scoring scale. If you are preparing for university applications in 2026 or 2027, make sure your practice materials reflect the current examination.

Reading in the 2026 TOEFL iBT

These are the current ETS task families for the Reading section. The test includes university-related and everyday communication, with tasks designed to assess practical English proficiency.

Current task types

  • Complete the Words — Restore missing letters in words within a short text, using grammar and context to make informed choices.
  • Read in Daily Life — Interpret short everyday texts, such as messages and notices, for meaning, detail and inference.
  • Read an Academic Passage — Understand a short academic text, including main ideas, details and vocabulary in context.

Approximate section baseline: 30 minutes · approximately 50 items. Item counts and timing may vary because the revised test adapts.

What to practise with C2

Vocabulary in context, reading purpose and careful interpretation of short texts.

We identify recurring difficulties, practise current task formats and provide focused teacher feedback rather than relying on outdated TOEFL materials.

How is TOEFL iBT scored in 2026?

Each of the four skills receives a score from 1 to 6, in half-point increments. The overall score is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band. ETS links the scale to CEFR proficiency levels.

During a two-year transition beginning January 2026, score reports also include a comparable overall score on the former 0–120 scale. This is a reporting comparison, not a promise that scores on different tests are interchangeable.

How long is the TOEFL iBT?

ETS lists approximate baseline section times of 30 minutes Reading, 29 Listening, 23 Writing and 8 Speaking. Allow approximately two hours for the test overall, including directions.

Because the revised Reading and Listening sections are adaptive, actual items and timing can vary. Confirm the latest arrangements with ETS before your test.

Using an older preparation book? Some legacy practice exercises can still build general English, but they do not necessarily represent the examination you will sit. Use current ETS practice materials for task-specific preparation.

STUDENT RESPONSE

I think group study is better because students can help each other. It is good and you can learn more.

TEACHER FEEDBACK

The preference is clear. Add a specific reason and an example, and organise the response more explicitly.

IMPROVED RESPONSE

I prefer studying in groups because classmates can exchange ideas and explain difficult concepts. For example, discussing a challenging topic together can help everyone understand it more clearly.
